The City of Calgary has released the results of the 2016 Citizen Satisfaction Survey. These survey results are one way The City gathers input to understand the needs and perceptions of Calgarians and identify areas to address. Citizens’ perceptions about quality of life remain strong and satisfaction with the level and quality of City programs and services remains high. However, there are some shifts in public opinion such as tolerance for tax increases and several quality of life metrics have declined. These shifts are not surprising given the current economic climate in Calgary. "These data show that, despite facing challenging times, Calgarians are resilient and remain optimistic about the future of our city,” said Mayor Naheed Nenshi. “We may all be hurting right now, but I'm pleased to see that public satisfaction with The City and the services it provides remains high. Research like this helps Council as we prepare to make decisions regarding mid-cycle adjustments and how The City can support the quality of life we all enjoy. ” Citizen Satisfaction Survey highlights 83 per cent of Calgarians say their quality of life is good, but 37 per cent think the quality of life has ‘worsened’ in the past three years – a significant 12 percentage point increase from 2015. 79 per cent of Calgarians are satisfied with the level and quality of City programs and services. Infrastructure, traffic and roads remain at the top of the issue agenda, transit continues to hold second place and crime, safety and policing is a solid third. More than six in ten Calgarians say The City provides good value for their property tax dollars. A number of surveys, including the 2016 Citizen Satisfaction Survey, report that Calgarians have a generally optimistic view about the future and their overall quality of life, while slightly lower, is still quite high. The Citizen Satisfaction Survey is one of many citizen inputs that will help to inform City Council during discussions on the 2017 budget and business plans that start Monday, Nov. 21. The Action Plan Mid-Cycle Adjustments report will available at calgary.ca/checkin later today. To provide input into City programs and services on an ongoing basis, Calgarians are encouraged to sign up for Citizens’ View, Calgary’s online panel at citizensview.ca.
